The opening game of the six nations was Ireland vs. Italy at Croke park. There were some good sequences of play, mostly from Ireland, and Italy got a chargedown try - but Ireland didn't dominate as they might have done, the scoreline of 29-11 flattered them. Ireland did what they needed to do, but this performance would not have held up against a team such as France. The play was slow from the rick, they spent so long discussing what they were going to do with the ball that Italy had ample time to prepare to defend. Quick ball, please! Both teams seem content for the ball to be on the ground buried by a pile of bodies.
Italy did have a few good breaks, the 79th minute was a good opportunity, but it wasn't to be.
As adverts for the six nations go, this was pretty mundane. Let's hope England vs. Wales lives up to the billing.
As the BBC commentator said: "Ireland 29, Italy 11. It will get better".
.....at least, we hope it will
