I've just seen an analysis which looks at the left/right question in British Politics, and finds that the divide is more along the lines of isolationist/hang 'em high vs internationalist and 'social pressures lead to crime'. There is also an economic axis (which has little differences between parties)!
They call the major spread in British Politics the 'axis of UKIP' and show that UKIP tends to attract disaffected Tories fromn across the board, and not the hardliners preferentially!
Unfortunately it is a powerpoint presentation, but if you have Powerpoint, it is here.
One nice result is that generally as education increases, the sympathies with UKIP decreases.
