Six Nations - Week 5

So, the Six Nations will be won by either Ireland or Wales, with Wales needing to beat Ireland by 13 points. Today we have three matches. We start with Italy vs. France at 1:15pm (2:15pm local time). After last week's thrashing from England, France will be seeking to regain some pride. Italy will be smelling blood, and the chance to avoid a whitewash. This is a game for honour. I predicted that France would keep the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy, and I see no reason to change this prediction. Obviously this implies that I stand by the whitewash prediction for Italy. I'd love to be wrong about that.

This is immediately followed by England vs. Scotland at 3:30pm. This is the Calcutta Cup game. I expected Scotland to win the Calcutta cup, but after last week I'm optimistic that England can hold it. At least one of me will be wrong.

Then, at 5:30pm, is the finale. Wales vs. Ireland. The winner will receive the Triple Crown. If Ireland wins they get the Grand Slam for the first time since 1948. If Wales win by less than 13 points, then Ireland are denied the Grand Slam, but win the six nations (both teams are likely to look dejected).

If Wales win by 13 points or more, then they win the six nations. This should be a tasty matchup.

Coverage on BBC1 starts at 1pm.
