Wasps vs Leicester Tigers - Guinness Premiership, 2009

Once again, fixture congestion means that big Premiership games are played when key players are at the Six Nations. Today, Wasps play Leicester at Adams Park. The Premiership looks like this.

  Team P W D L F A BP PTS
1 Gloucester 14 10 0 4 315 260 5 45
2 London Irish 14 8 0 6 330 213 9 41
3 Sale 13 9 0 4 238 188 4 40
4 Bath 12 8 1 3 306 244 6 40

6 Leicester 12 7 1 4 255 228 2 32
7 Saracens 13 6 0 7 295 243 7 31

11 Worcester 12 3 2 7 205 267 2 18

The team selection is as follows:

Backs Forwards Reserves
15. Mark Van Gisbergen 14. Chris Bishay 13. Dominic Waldouck 12. Josh Lewsey 11. Tom Voyce 10. Danny Cipriani 9. Mark Robinson 1. Tim Payne 2. Rob Webber 3. Pat Barnard 4. Simon Shaw 5. George Skivington 6. Dan Leo 7. Serge Betsen (C) 8. John Hart 16. Joe Ward 17. Tom French 18. Richard Birkett 19. Hugo Ellis 20. Joe Simpson 21. Dave Walder 22. Rob Hoadley

Based upon Cipriani and Walder's recent form, I'd be happier with Walder starting ahead of Cipriani. Still, when Cipriani is on form, he's formidable, and he's not going to get back without game time - and he can always be swapped out for Walder.

Leicester's Martin Corry has received a ban in the Heineken Cup, it doesn't look like this affects the premiership game as he is listed on the team sheet.

If it doesn't affect the Premiership, the ban is meaningless as the next Heineken Cup game is the 11th April (Leicester host Bath). The ban expires on March 26th.

Backs Forwards Reserves
15 Scott Hamilton 14 Matt Smith 13 Seru Rabeni 12 Aaron Mauger (captain) 11 Alesana Tuilagi 10 Sam Vesty 9 Julien Dupuy 1 Boris Stankovich 2 George Chuter 3 Dan Cole 4 Louis Deacon 5 Ben Kay 6 Craig Newby 7 Ben Woods 8 Jordan Crane 16 Mefin Davies 17 Marcos Ayerza 18 Martin Corry 19 Brett Deacon 20 Ben Youngs 21 Ayoola Erinle 22 Johne Murphy

I'll be cheering for Wasps, obviously - but this doesn't look like it'll be Wasps' season. I'd love a win, but I fear that Leicester will have their wish and beat Wasps at home.
