Monkey!

The nature of Monkey.... was irrepresible!

Masaaki Sakai as Monkey

The classic Japanese television programme (which people of a certain age will remember), Monkey!, is being remade.

The Original Monkey! featured Masaaki Sakai in the title role, to my eyes was, at the time, an almost incomprehensible feast of weird and wonderful sights. Monsters would appear, fight, then leave. Master (Tripitaka), Monkey, Piggsy and Sandy would continue their journey onward. I was never quite sure where they were headed!

I do hope this means that the original will find it's way back onto our screens in a reasonable timeslot...

The New Monkey will star Shingo Katori, who is one of five singers in the Japanese pop group, SMAP.

UPDATE: It does, the originals are showing on ITV4 on Fridays at 6pm, from last friday. It looks like it also goes out on a Thursday.

Altogether now:

Born from an egg on a mountain top,
Funkiest Monkey that ever popped,
He knew every magic trick under the sun,
Tease the Gods and everyone can have some fun.
Monkey magic, Monkey magic,
Monkey magic, Monkey magic,
Monkey magic, Monkey magic ooh!

What a cocky, saucey Monkey this one is.
All the Gods were angry and they punished him.
Until he was saved by a kindly priest,
And that was the start of their pilgrimage quest.
Monkey magic, Monkey magic,
Monkey magic, Monkey magic,
Monkey magic, Monkey magic,
Monkey magic, Monkey magic ooh!
