Charles Clarke and ID Cards

Charles Clarke is claiming that ID Cards are necessary and citing the recent ricin case as an example. The fact that this chap had already been fingerprinted and was on the system - and this had no part in his downfall - seems to be irrelevant.

Having ID cards in Spain didn't stop the Madrid bombers.

On the other hand, the Tories are using the Ricin case to stir up paranoia about asylum. Shame that people don't contrast with this.

Why can the two main parties not just be straight?
