TMA 4 is in the bag, and just needs delivering to the tutor. The deadline is tomorrow, so I am currently trying to establish whether I should post it (and be overdue by a couple of days), or hand-deliver it (this’d take several hours).
It’s done. Crikey.
Things that interest me…

I posted mine off yesterday morning - i wasn’t happy with it, not with what i had done, but with how mind numblingly boring the TMA was. I can’t wait for this course to finish - its as poorly run as L192. The OU and modern, living languages… just cannot co-exist in my opinion.
I’ve decided - I am not continuing with French next year. What I’ll have to do for the European Studies BA (which requires a Level 2 language) is to do one of the following:
1) Just opt for a different BA.
2) Come back and do L211 (probably not)
3) Do the other bits of the course, which can count for other BAs, then do the French elsewhere and get credit transfer (finding out what’s needed to be equivalent). I.e. Splash some cash at some point down the line and given a substantial block of time to the issue
I think next year I’ll be doing a level 1 course, either A103: An Introduction to the Humanities or DD100An Introduction to the Social Sciences: Understanding Social Change. The latter is a specified course in both International Studies and European Studies, the former is only specified in European Studies, but can count in International Studies.
Both of these course seem quite scary to me, but I think that virtually anything other than a foreign language is more suited to me.
I am attracted by the computing course, learning PHP and so forth - but these isn’t really broadening (though it would be deepening), so I still have decisions about future direction, though I know it’s not L211
With Computing I could probably get some credit transfer given my Physics BSc, my maths A-levels, and the fact that I’m pretty IT literate in the first place. However, as I’ve said, the issue is one of depth versus breadth, and I think I want some breadth, though the depth is pretty enticing to me! I even find myself looking at Mathematics, but again, this is simply going deeper, not broader.
I’m also doing L120 and always check out to see how you have done in your TMAs! I sent my TMA04 the day before it was due, otherwise I would have to hand deliver to my tutor who was in France for the summer!
I haven’t enjoyed this course as much as L192 mainly because of the tutor I think but I have signed up for L211 (but the online version) as I can’t cope with stressful tutorials (with students walking out) anymore!
I have also been having some 1:1 home tution from Alliance Français who are fantastic and I have really enjoyed this but I’m continuing with the OU as I would really like a modern languages degree.
Good luck with TMA04 and with the exam!
(Edit: I’m not doing L211, the OU languages courses just don’t work for me, but do keep coming back! I’ve yet to get my TMA04 result back. Alliance Français would be a great way to go for me if they weren’t quite so London based! I think next year I’ll go for one of the Level 1 compulsory courses on International Studies (or European Studies). If I want the European studies I’ll still have to do a Level 2 language at some point, but situations may change down the line… - Murk)
I’m on L120 as well this year, and it’s all been going well right up to just before the ECA’s, when I seem to have jumped into some alternate dimension where my life was actually a soap opera.
I’m not going to do another course I don’t think. But if you’re thinking of DD100, it’s a good course. I did it three years ago and it was quite interesting.
Now you lot have all finished your ECA oral, I’ve got to do mine by telephone on 23rd Sept!
(Edit: Mine is next week…. I’m not entirely confident it won’t be a complete waste of time, as I’m so far behind on the course I may as well not have started. Nevertheless, I’ll do it…. - Murk)
Er… I meant the 27th… d’oh!
I’ve disliked this course, but on a personal level, i’ve got a lot of problems i am dealing with. I wont be continuing my french studies with the OU after this. I still have to submit ECA2… woohoo… not.
I will be continuing with the OU, but not with their French courses. I’m convinced that it can work, but not for me (and not for many, I suspect).
That said, their summer school is formidable!
