How this thing works is that aspiring music artists want to get $50000 in order to record a CD. This is done by selling 5000 parts at $10 each to future partners. Once the $50000 is raised a CD is recorded professionally and delivered to each partner. CDs are also sold, and both the partners and artists get a cut.
Up until the $50000 is raised, the ‘believer’ can pull their cash out at any time. It’s quite a nice thing, the investors get a CD (at the least) and buying more parts will
As an incentive, there is free music which can be downloaded on the site, as well as music which can be streamed. There is also a jukebox function (though at the moment it’s quite random, and doesn’t seem to have an ‘I like this’ function to enable recommendations to be made).
I’ve bought parts in several artists, the full details can be seen on my profile. The first investment was in Julia Marcell, an Polish Piano Player who has her own site. Her music has a simple elegance, with her clear voice cutting through the simple backing track. Her English accent is excellent (at least when sung!) and at the edge of detection is a hint of an accent which gives added interest.
By coincidence, Bim mentioned my third investment in their Tribune article, Lucia Imam. Lucia is an American singer, her samples vary from ‘We dance’, a track with a vaguely latin feel to it, to a cover of ‘Moon River’ which is sung in a sultry style.
Though there are some others I’ve got my eyes on these artists are my first artists, and hence a little special. I hope they reach their targets soon, it’ll be such a buzz to get a CD that I had some (small) part in causing to exist.
I also keep an eye on bands who aren’t (yet) on the site, such as Kovak, who made an impression on me at Guilfest in 2006, if they appeared on sell-a-band I’d take some parts on sight.
Sell A Band – The Movie
This movie is an intro to Sell A Band. I’ve got an account with Sell A Band as a ‘believer’, as I said the other week.

My second investment is in the UK duo, Bim, who, I’ve since learned, were featured in the Sell A Band newsletter called Tribune. Like Julia, Bim have their own site. Their sound mixes acoustic and electronic music.
