In which I talk #dorothy

So, it’s a guilty pleasure, but I’ve been watching ‘Over the Rainbow’, that BBC 1, saturday night festival of Camp. It’s been good fun, but tonight we’re down to the final three.

Lauren, Sophie and Danielle. My favourite, Steph Fearon, was voted out last week.

The final three are all are very talented, and would make a good job, but who is best suited for the role?

For me, it has to be Danielle. She just ‘fits’ the best from the remaining potentials. She’s got those Judy Garland looks (which, as much as I hate to admit it, are important) and can act her little ruby slippers off.

Lauren is great, but for Dorothy she’s paradoxically too polished. That’s a silly thing to say, I know, but there it is. Anyone looking at #dorothy on twitter on a saturday will know she’s not the most popular of the three. Lauren would be very good for a different show. I can picture her being spectacular in something like ‘Chicago’.

Sophie is excellent, though she keeps putting me in mind of Karen Gillam who plays Amy in Dr. Who, very similar expressions and both red-heads. It’s the proximity of the two shows on BBC1.

The other week I was rather annoyed when her father said that ‘The People of Wales had let her down’. This should not be a national vote, but a vote for the part. This isn’t her fault, though.

I’d be happy to see Sophie as Dorothy if Danielle wasn’t still in the competition. As with Lauren, however, I can picture Sophie elsewhere. She’d be a good fit for ‘Avenue Q’, she’s got just the right comic touches for Kate Monster/Lucy, and with a colour change for her hair, I can imagine her as ‘Sandy’ in Grease.

My best guess for tonight is Danielle, though throughout I’ve had a poor record. In the previous series I had Jodie Prenger picked from Day 1, but this time, no. My first pick didn’t make the final ten, then Steph Fearon came to the fore, but she didn’t survive past the final four (I suspect because people are mistaken that everyone working on farms in 1930s kansas were white). If Steph isn’t snapped up for some production, I’ll be surprised, that girl was really an all rounder, and she didn’t survive, I think, mostly due to her not being a ‘Judy-Garland-a-like’. From the other Dorothy Potentials that have left, Jess stands out – she’d be great in something like ‘We Will Rock You’ or ‘Avenue Q’. Bronte seemed made for something like ‘Legally Blonde’.

So there you go, I think it’s Danielle – but I wouldn’t be shocked by the selection of any of the remaining three.

Worryingly, I’ve just realised that I’m old enough to legally be the father of two of the remaining contestants. Crikey, these things creep up on you, don’t they?

In which I see Iron Man 2

Last week we went to see ‘Iron Man 2′. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. It didn’t pretend to be highbrow, but it was damned good fun.

I like the direction Marvel’s taking in their movies, knitting all the films together – with Iron Man references through the Hulk film, with Sam Jackson appearing at the end of the first Iron man film. This trend continues here.

There is a references (fairly obvious) to Captain America, Marvel’s 2012 film, as well as continuing references to ‘The Avengers’ (also 2012). There is the now traditional post-credit sequence (which on my showing was seen by us and three chinese ladies – everyone else had gone). That post-credit sequence gave me a grin – it was simple and effective.

‘Thor’ is the 2011 Marvel film, and 2012 should go gangbusters!

I’m hoping Captain America will be a period piece, ending with Cap’n being ‘frozen’ and hence being available for ‘Avengers’.

I would like the movie franchise to go in the direction of the excellent ‘Civil War’ for Avengers 2, setting the stage for a ‘Dark’ Iron Man 3.

In which I thoroughly 'Kick Ass'.

I know the film ‘Kick Ass’ has been out for a while, but I only got to see it last night. I was away from home, and two minutes from a cinema, so why not?

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was simply awesome. The basic premise (revealed in the first seconds of the film) is ‘In a world of comic books, why has nobody ever tried it for real?’.

In the film, people do try to be a hero.

Go. See this film. ‘Hit Girl’ was awesome. Predicting what the Daily Mail would say I thought I’d check it out, and I wasn’t disappointed: Don’t be fooled by the hype: This crime against cinema is twisted, cynical, and revels in the abuse of childhood – yep, it does that. With regard to ‘Hit Girl’, the article says ‘Oh, and one of the male teenage characters acknowledges that he’s attracted to her’ – yes he does – and his friend pulls him up on that in the very next line.

It was not to be taken in that way. ‘Hit Girl’ is ‘Hit Girl’ for a reason which rivals ‘The Bride’ in Pulp Fiction – if you really want to look for depth, it’s about childhood lost.

I’m not going to argue with the daily mail, who’s got the energy? Except to say, they hated it, so it can’t be all bad.

Three key comments on the Mail article – Mike from Glamorgan said:

Seriously, get a grip. The film is fantastic.
The Hit-Girl character is 11. The film ratings are designed so children of this age should not see the film. Therefore, only the kids who have parents who are irresponsible enough not to check up on the film are going to be watching this film. Of course some will slip through the cracks as always, but my 8 year old brother (die hard superhero fan) has seen the (clean) trailers, expressed an interest in seeing the film and I have already told him he won’t be seeing it. Yes, the film is crude and violent in places, but it is also extremely fun for the (age appropriate) audiences. As for the ‘sexualizing’ of Hit-Girl, her standard costume looks like a character from kid’s show Lazy Town.

and tbrookside, a commenter from the USA, said:

I’m glad you wrote this, because otherwise I might not have seen this film. But you have done more to make sure I’ll see it than their entire marketing campaign. How could I stay away, after an article like this?

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/reviews/article-1262948/Kick-Ass-Dont-fooled-hype–This-crime-cinema-twisted-cynical-revels-abuse-childhood.html#ixzz0mK0cu52w

Someone called Lydia said:

Kick-Ass is actually a very intelligent and different take at what we would normally consider to be a ‘comic book’ film. It actually mocks Spiderman and other typical films of the same genre – it’s Hollywood rubbish like Fantastic 4 and Daredevil that just make most of us want to gouge out our eyes and then feed them to ninja sharks.

In short, I came out of this film, not having enjoyed a film so much in ages. It’s a straight 5/5, and the blockbusters this year will have their work cut out to beat it. I agree with the mail inasmuch as *on paper* its not wholesome and pure, but damn, is it fun!

I got so much joy from Nick Cage doing ‘the voice’ when in costume, from Hit Girl’s awesomeness, and from ‘Red Mist’s’ first meeting with ‘Kick Ass’.

I know my wife, a gentle soul by nature, would love it too.

She may be gentle, and she may go faint if I cut my finger, but she sat with snickering with glee at the opening of ‘Gladiator’.

She’d love this.
