Daleks Return

The Daleks return to Doctor Who tonight, so I thought I’d try and resurrect my ‘Pulped Dalek’ theory (a nod to ‘Pulp Fiction’)

People who like the Daleks tend not to appreciate the Cybermen and People who like the Cybermen don’t get Daleks.

Personally I thought the Daleks were terrifying. I really did hide behind the sofa when they came on screen, and oddly, just thinking about them now gave me a cold feeling inside. They’re faceless, relentless, and they’ve learned how to go up stairs. They may be slow, but by thunder they keep coming.

The Cyberman were just a bunch of guys in metal suits to me. You could grab them by their handles and break their necks. You could kill them with gold powder, which, let’s face it, is pretty inert stuff (though rare and hard to get hold of in a hurry).

People who like the Cybermen seem to view the Daleks as rolling pepperpots, easy to outrun, easy to push over…. no, I just can’t agree. The Daleks scared me too much as a child, and anyone who was scared by the Cybermen instead is slightly odd to me.

Yes, there are people who were scared by both, or by neither. There are people who like some other alien best – but one or other will be dominant. Generally, it seems that people either fall in the ‘Dalek’ or ‘Cyberman’ camp. You can’t be affected by both equally.

Given that Dr. Who was first transmitted in the 1960s, this gives rise to an interesting Parallel.

In the 60s you either liked the Beatles or the Stones. Sure, there were people who liked both, but they always had a preference for one or the other. Granted there were people who liked, say, the Small Faces – but given a choice between a Beatles/Stones concert and Small Faces, would they really have gone for the Small Faces? Or as Mia would put it in a US context, you’re either an Elvis person or a Beatles person

My theory is that when it comes to important subjects, there’s only two ways a person can answer. For instance there’s two kinds of people in this world, Cybermen people and Dalek people. Now Dalek people can like Cybermen. And Cybermen people can like the Daleks. But nobody likes them both equally. Somewhere you have to make a choice. And that choice tells me who you are.

So, who are you?

About Murk

I'm interested in a range of things, from science and computers, to history and creative stuff. I'm leaving a lot out. My problem is time. As a result, murky.org, flits around from topic to topic as my interest is piqued. It's all tagged though - so it should be easy to find other posts of mine on similar topics - do give the RSS feed a try, and I welcome, nay, I crave comments on articles.
